In response to the story on Partners Healthcare receiving disproportionally high payments, the state is considering moving in to investigate.
My initial reaction is that Partners was simply practicing good business, and they are able to negotiate the increased payments because patients demand their services.
Perhaps this well-publicized exposure can open up eyes, and make some realize that “brand name” medicine isn’t necessarily the best.
However, there will always be a significant subset that will demand being sent to MGH or the Brigham, and as long as this demographic exists, Partners will always have the upper hand when bargaining with insurers.
