Silence while eating
A recent elementary school policy enforces silence in the cafeteria due to the risk of choking. John Ford takes a look at this ridiculous policy:Let's see...
* 66 deaths per year due to choking on food products.
* Over 60 million children in that age group in the United States (2000 Census data).
* Roughly three meals per day per child.
* 365 days that year.
This comes to about one death per billion meals.
Eating is arguably one of the safer behaviors we engage in. Even children 14 and under appear remarkably adept at it.
Comments:
This is going to spread like wildfire as if a child chokes in a cafeteria a lawyer will say "why didn't the school district follow the lead of that other school and protect the lives of our childrens?" Good luck trying to defend yourself in a jury of morans against that charge.
This is just nuts. Another excuse for schools to control behavior they don't like. It's so funny to me that people complain endlessly about homeschooled kids not getting socialization because they aren't in public schools and then I see something like this... during one of the few times kids actually get to practice socializing freely, they are restricted. Ugh.
