So says a recent JAMA study:
Doctors often have a falsely exaggerated view of their own capabilities, a new study suggests. In fact, physicians who were judged by outsiders to be the worst performers in a given area often gave themselves especially high marks, researchers report.
“There is a subset of clinicians who appear, either by training or personality, unable to judge themselves,” said study lead researcher Dr. David Davis, a professor of health policy management and evaluation at the University of Toronto, in Canada.

Talk to Dr. Crippin in Britain to get the lowdown on how well the system of peer assessment works over there. And what it costs.
The fact that half of the residents surveyed didn’t know that patients not fluent in english have a federal right to interpretive services is the only concrete example of the egregious manner in which physicians hold too high an opinion of themselves.
Why do I smell another beurocratic scheme into which the AMA can insert itself??
Does this differ from any other group of humans granted an exclusive or elite status? How about compared with any run-of-the-mill citizen?
Obviously only half of all people can be above average (median), yet the typical citizen thinks they are the exception. Relax and enjoy the safety and security of your commute home today because you are surrounded not by the idiots and morons you thought were out there, but by self declared geniuses. The typical driver thinks that they are above average http://www.ambulancedriving.com/research/WP65-rateaboveav.html
So why shouldn’t your doctor think that they too are above average?
No surprise to me. Half of my classmates in medical school were absolute idiots, including some that managed to finish in the top 10%. (Of course I wasn’t one of those overestimating their abilities – heh, heh heh!) I don’t see that oversight by another oversight committee (that think they are smarter than average) will improve anything.
Great. IQ tests for doctors. Another irrelevant excuse for the sodomites to make money at our expense.

Thats a bad example of what you are trying to argue. First off, residents are trainees and not full physicians. Secondly, residents are not “in charge” of finding interpreters. If a patient comes in, they ask if an interpreter is available, and their responsibility STOPS there. Its up to hospital management for the rest.
On anohter note, if what you say is true (I have heard of no federal law which requires interpreters) its an absolute joke.
What if somebody comes in speaking Aramaic? Is the hospital on the hook for finding an interpreter? I seriously fucking doubt it.
BTW, can I go to France, Germany, Mexico, etc and demand an English interpreter? Do they have “federal” laws requiring interpreters in all languages? I seriously fucking doubt that too.
“BTW, can I go to France, Germany, Mexico, etc and demand an English interpreter? “
No, you can only demand that if you go to a Nursing Home in the U.S. (You’ll need it to talk to the staff!)
P.S. Not getting an interpreter is a new form of revenue for the sodomites. They’ll just tell the jury you didn’t care enough to even listen to the patient!

If you receive federal funds you have to provide interpretive services. Well and good. How about the doctors who’s lasts names have more consonants than vowels and English is a second language that they learned just well enough to pass the test to be an American doctor? I appreciate the hardships foreign-born doctors go through to move from their countries of origin. The HMO where I work is like the United Nations. Regardless of how “intelligent” a physician is, if I can’t understand them because of a language barrier they possess, the interaction will be disappointing.
Seems to me all the great docs I know (in all specialties) are the ones who think they’re not that great. The arrogant ones are usually the ones who know much less that they think they do.
Give me a humble doctor any day! I’d prefer an insecure doc who gets an extra consult taking care of me – much better than someone who is practicing medicine outside their knowlege base.

Isn’ that a wee-bit of a generalization?
“If you receive federal funds you have to provide interpretive services.”
I seriously doubt thats the case, because if it were true then every hospital in the nation is out of compliance. There are over 7000 known languages in the world. The biggest hospitals in the US may know have interpreters for maybe 10-12 of those languages.
“I seriously doubt thats the case, because if it were true then every hospital in the”
Most hospital subscribe to the AT & T interpreter line. They have interpreters in most major languages. I kind of miss the old days when we would call a local chinese restaurant at 3 am and order delivery and have the delivery boy translate for us when he showed up.
I will not talk to through the AT&T line at 330 in the morning to tease out the nuances and ask a 10 system review of symptoms. This is America and we freaking speak English

Not for very much longer, infidel dog.
Your grandchildren will be Muslim.
Allahu akbar!

The fact that most doctors feel that they are “Better” than they really may be can only be defined as inconsequential hearsay.
For the most part – it doesn’t matter. Most doctors are well enough informed and able to practice efficiently within their areas of specialty.
This isn’t some natural disaster in the making.
By the way – injecting joints has never proven to be a magic cure-all for arthritis and related conditions.
Why they chose this technique as an example leads me to speculate about where their heads [ the authors ] really are.
They don’t sound like great decision makers either.
American Muslim,
Eventually good overcomes evil. Even the liberal left will someday come to their senses so the backward, barbaric, 8th century culture of islamo-fascism can be defeated. The muslim world is intellectually bankrupt. They need the “infidels” to get their own oil out of the ground.
Yoo weel bend to the supreme weel! Keel you and all of your family!
Babulu Akhbar!
Signed,
American Infidel
Watch out the patriot act is alive and well.
