Health blog posts of the week, ending November 19, 2010

Here are the top posts from this past week, based on the number of times they were viewed.

1. First aid rules that everyone needs to know. First aid is defined as the immediate care given to an acutely injured or ill person. It can literally be life-saving so it behooves all of us to know some basic principles.

2. Taking a multivitamin, vitamin D and fish oil every day. There is very little doubt that if we eat the diet we were designed to eat and spend adequate time in the sun that we will get most if not all the nutrients we need.

3. Preventive care as a cost saving measure is a fallacy. The idea that preventive care finds medical problems early, treats them more cheaply and effectively than if they weren’t addressed until symptoms appear, and saves money in the long run is attractive, intuitive, and wrong.

4. Physicians the government wants to see. What does the future of reform hold? I don’t know. But I do know it may require an entirely new species of physician.

5. Why medical students are burning out and lacking altruism. Medical school admissions do not do a good job at identifying candidates that will provide an adequate workforce and/or will be good for medicine.
