Why the New England Patriots will beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl

After two weeks of hype, the big game is finally upon us. Living in New England for the past 13 years, I have been spoiled by our recent sports successes. The current Patriots run truly is something special and may not be duplicated in my lifetime.

Today, they face a strong Philadelphia Eagles squad – clearly the best team in a mediocre NFC conference. They are a well-balanced team, with Donovan McNabb having his best year, and now it looks like Terrell Owens may play, despite putting himself at serious future risk. They have an aggressive blitzing defense, similar to the Miami Dolphin’s, which is the type that gives Tom Brady fits. Their coach, Andy Reid, is undefeated with two weeks to prepare for a game.

Other than Terrell Owens (if healthy) and the defensive secondary, I would give the Patriots the edge in every other position. Running back, quarterback, defensive line, linebackers, and special teams. Enough has been written about Bill Belichick’s genius. Don’t forget his loyal defensive and offensive coordinators, Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis – both of whom are expected to leave after the season. The Patriots want to send them off in a blaze of glory. Tom Brady is already a two-time Super Bowl MVP at age 27. Enough said.

I think that the Patriots are too deep, too talented, and too experienced to lose this game. The key for the Eagles is McNabb, who has to play the game of his life, or else it’s a Patriots rout. Terrell Owens will be a wildcard. If he can bring it today, the Eagles can steal this game. Otherwise, enjoy the start of a Patriots dynasty.

Kevin, M.D.’s prediction:

Patriots 27 Eagles 20

Update:

7-7 at halftime. The Patriots defense is keeping them in it with key turnovers (a McNabb interception and a fumble recovery). The Eagles defense is staying tough – but they are having trouble stopping the run. I think that the Patriots will come out relying more on Dillon legs than Brady’s arm. They just can’t turn the ball over.

BTW – I thought the halftime show was pretty good.

Update 2:

24-21 Patriots. Let the dynasty talk begin!
