In my practice I have seen effects not only from ipods and other such music devices, but I am now seeing similar hearing damage in business persons who are/were on their cell phones often. Particularly outside sales people, and particularly those who also had to do alot of driving within their territories. The ambient noise in automobiles requires higher cell phone volumes.

Frustratingly, there is no information about the ages of the study participants. Would the effects be different in older MP3 player users, say, baby boomers, many of whom have been going to rock concerts for 40+ years and are already experiencing some degree of hearing loss?

Huge issue in pediatrics, Kevin. And I’m facing it with my own 11-year-old. We’re on the marked for volume restricted ear buds as we speak. We should all have real concerns about how this is going to play out over 20-30 years.
