Health effects from the BP oil spill

As the oil continues to pour into the gulf from the BP oil rig, we are witnessing not only an environmental disaster but a potential health crisis too.

It is not just the water that has been impacted the crude can become airborne in tiny particles and carried inland with the breeze. Those working to clean up are particularly at risk, as are pregnant women and people with underlying respiratory illness.

Locals are reporting symptoms of nausea, headaches, respiratory complaints, burning eyes and sore throats, all consistent with exposure to the volatile organic compounds found in the oil. Long term health concerns include neurological disorders and cancer.

After the Exxon Valdez spill, medical complications of liver disease, asthma, emphysema and pancreatic cancer were reported. The oil contains multiple volatile and toxic chemicals. For example, benzene, a recognized carcinogen is poorly soluble in water and because its gaseous form is heavier than air, it can accumulate on the water’s surface.

There are additionally mental health concerns including anxiety and depression from the stress which in turn can lead to alcohol, drug dependency and family discord.

The damage from the spill is sure to be felt for decades to come.

I can’t help but wonder why none of the doctors nor the media are telling these people in Florida , La, and Ala, what they can do to counter the effects of the oil, fumes and dispersal agents.

There are things that can be done without following BP’s protocol. Seems its like a bomb was dropped on the gulf coast states and no one is caring about the poeple left behind here.

At least Dr. Mark Sircus is one who is putting forth some information on natural and inexpensive ways to try to protect ourselves and mtigated damage to our health.
He is putting out information on how to make your own respirators, using sodium bicarbonate, magnesium, spirulina and chlorella, glutathione etc.

    Claudia,
It is important that we carefully evaluate any possible effects of spilled oil. It sounds a bit extremist/alarmist to me to suggest that people go out and buy/make respirators.

“Seems its like a bomb was dropped on the gulf coast states and no one is caring about the poeple left behind here.” — While colorful, I don’t think spilled oil, even in unbelievably massive quantities like what we are seeing in the Gulf, is the same as or remotely similar to a “dropped bomb.” But I do think you are selling all of us down here in Florida quite short. We talk about the oil all the time. We look carefully at the NOAA satellite images. And we wait for any possible effects to hit our shores and our people. We have seen none of these things to date. In fact, the oil does not look like it is going to hit the shores of most of Florida’s coastline, to date. We feel deeply for all other areas that might see oil effect their ecosystems.

Keep it real, as they say. Let not alarmist internet/media propagandists ruin your day with undue worry.

(Sorry, should be: “affect their ecosystems”)
