That's incredible. I left my take on what this new data means for the future of CT radiology and the patient's experience. It's not pretty. Sure, the patient probably does not have appendicitis, but since you are not allowed to miss ANY appendicitis, you CT people more than are needed.Until patients and lawyers lower their expectations from a 0% miss rate (which will never happen), CT scanning will continue to increase.

The increased rate of CT scanning is mostly due to the broken liability system. Hopefully, these kind of studies will help physician community to at least help in educating the lay or overzealous patients. It is laughable where majority of abdominal pains have to end in CT scans rather than wait 2-3 days with close follow up.. Gas pain can hurt like crazy too and physicians need to lead patients with good education and patients will be comfortable if they know that their M.D will be there for them if things don't go well. We need to build those relationships again.

As long as the patient in insured and the culture is do more than appropriate, CT scans and MRI will be overdone unfortunately.
