I have purchased tee shirts from the hospital I had sirgery done at. Maybe medicine needs better marketing. The high ratings for medical TV shows are not just for the romances. Many patients feel their Dr. or nurse is a medical Superstar! Marketing. Sounds silly, but I agree with previous commenter.

I would pay $250 to see a surgery and I’m a retired nobody. You have to compare coverage of the nobel prize to coverage of inductee of a retired star into the MLB hall of fame. Neither will garner much attention since it's not real-time drama. People who are interested already have an idea who will be chosen and while they may respect that "player", the winning "play" has long past. Now, current scientific discoveries get a lot of attention, but people don't want to dwell on it because scientific progress (man vs cancer etc) is a very very slow-progressng story, unlike Angels vs yankees.

That’s not a valid comparison. Newsday and the NYT publish special sections every week devoted to science, sinking gobs of money into a lengthy features and elaborate graphics. That's not to say their effort comes close to what's sunk into sports coverage, as you say. And, smaller papers that can't afford anything but general assignment and sports reporters might (wrongly) assume their readers aren't interested in science, so they ignore the choices available to them on the wire services they buy from. As far as I know, all wire services offer science and health stories as part of their daily news packages.

Actually, there are (or once were) newspapers with teams of science writers, including The New York Times, Boston Globe, Newsday, Los Angeles Times and other big papers. Let's start with universities and colleges better known for their educational opportunities than their sports! Let's give science and math the sports budget and pay professors/teachers what the coaches get. Ugh. Nice to dream.

Oh, please, don’t get me started.
