I'm only a patient, but would never dream of telling my (many) physicians what drug to prescribe. I have enough respect for them and their years of education and experience to trust their judgment...surely better than a TV ad. And, I'm perfectly capable of doing research on my own if I have questions or concerns that they didn't address. There could be so many dollars saved by elimination of DTC...gosh, maybe drug prices could be reduced and become more affordable...what a concept!

Roberta,
I totally agree with the concept of banning DTC advertising. The pens and balls and bags never caused me to change my prescribing ( I use Walmart and Target a lot). The problem is the PhDs and the research MDs. They make their living and prestige off of hundreds of thousands of dollar of research funds. Just today in the New England Journal of Medicine had a paper noting that research papers fail to explicitly define adverse reactions. Their conclusions often go far beyond their research. The academics seem to try to distract the bigger crime by pointing to equivocal happenings. The negative studies are published in small journals abroad. Yes some specialists can make much more money .. hematologists with oncology medications and red cell producers but not the small guy in the trenches.

I am a family practice physician.
