Will this picture prevent you from buying cigarettes?

A display of attention-getting cancer artwork to potentially deter smokers from buying cigarette packs. Will something like this work in real life?

Don’t all users of cigarettes eventually die? As do non-users?

I think every little bit helps – at least it’s entertaining to look at!

Half of cigarette users are immortal!

so important. We should worry. We should care.

I am not smoking but the image and words are effective to stop smoking. if the smoker has the will.

Denis Leary spoke of this in his first comedy album. To paraphrase, you could print a block box, with a skull and cross bones on them, call the cigarettes Tumors, and people would line up around the block to buy. “Hey, I hear you get cancer after one puff!”

Honestly, I would pay extra.

Do you mean to tell me I have a 50% shot of never dying if I smoke? Sign me up!

I lived in Tokyo from 2002-2003 and they still had cigarette vending machines on the streets. There was one brand called “Peace” with a dove logo on the box, and another brand called “Death” with a black box and a skull/crossbones as the logo. I bought a pack of “Death” as a souvenir.

Don’t think it will work that much. Like most smokers don’t already know this.

I think we should let the cancer patients of tomorrow pay for the the cancer patients of today. Tax the hell out of cigs and use the money for cancer research/treatments.

i will gladly start smoking for a 50% chance at immortality! what a deal

If it was an actual pic, maybe. But the artwork is pretty nice, though.

Nice artwork, won’t help. A lot of smokers won’t see anything beyond an anatomical line drawing. And the falling figure & 50% mortality claim on the side are just funny. A photo of blackened, cancerous lung or a patient relying on an oxygen tank would perhaps be more effective, but I doubt it; it’s not like people don’t know about the association between smoking and lung cancer.

Attempts to scare people into healthier behavior don’t seem to work well. Maybe it would be more effective to print tips for quitting on the package.

“Don’t all users of cigarettes eventually die? As do non-users?” Not really, I know a few men who have been smoking since they were 25 and are still smoking 40 years later. I am not saying that is good but people like this do exist..
