25 year old freshly minted MD here who was diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer during third year of school. I lucked out from the morbidity perspective, but the surgery (I had bilateral neck dissections) and the subsequent endocrine management has been difficult. My specialty choices were narrowed because of the changes I underwent after requiring full hormone replacement.

Luckily, this doesn’t kill a lot of people, but it’s a major cause of morbidity.

I’m not sure that many doctors actually do a neck exam without cause anymore. I think I’ve had 2 as an adult (one of them because I was having pain in my neck).

I don’t get it.
A neck exam should be part of a physical; why don’t we just encourage people to get annual physicals?
Plus, thyroid cancer is quite indolent and works have a high rate of false positives.
