Independent practitioners? Around here they don't exist in primary care, because primary care loses money. I am an employed general internist in a rural area, I make (gross) about $70,000 a year, have over $100,000 in med school loans, and I spend 60% of my time doing paperwork demanded by for-profit insurance companies trying to minimize the care they will pay for so they can maximize profits.
