Is health IT ready for federal dollars?

December 18, 2008

Wisely, Barack Obama has recognized the need for an influx of money to modernize our outdated medical record system.

But is the current crop of electronic medical record systems ready for a nationwide rollout? I’ve argued previously that they’re too disjointed, with the inability for programs to talk to one another. In effect, pouring money into this broken system can make the situation worse.

Maggie Mahar analyzes the situation with her usual insightful approach, writing that industry experts agree that “investing in the EHRs that the industry is now producing would be a truly terrible idea.”

The VA (Veterans Administration) has a powerful and proven medical record system. It has taken them from one of the worst hospitals in the country to some of the better hospitals around.
