Does cardiology discriminate against women?

December 18, 2008

Although the number of female cardiologists have doubled over the past decade, women still represent less than 20 percent of the specialty.

The study (via MedPage Today) draws the ire of cardiologist Dr. Wes, who asks, “does the fact that the field of cardiology (especially interventional cardiology) requires exposure to xrays mean the field of cardiology is discriminatory against women?”

He wonders if the emergencies inherent in the field prevents it from being more family friendly. After all, it’s not like they could “rid [the] profession of emergencies to better meet the needs of female cardiologists.”

Nice quote: After all, it’s not like they could “rid [the] profession of emergencies to better meet the needs of female cardiologists.”

So 80% of potential female cardiologists have a family to tend to, and that’s why there are so few women in the field?

Do you think this is true, Dr. Kevin?

The midnight pages of first-time parents reporting ear aches and calls to the OR for emergency C-sections doesn’t seem to have swayed the female Pediatricians too much, Dr. Kevin. Nice try. But there MUST be a reason. I’m a female who sure would like to find a lady cardiologist. I’ve been looking for weeks (that’s how I ended up here). I will have to travel to Loma Linda I’m afraid. There is NO way for a woman to find a listing and I’m in trouble if I don’t find one soon.
