Comparing hospital quality and cost in Massachusetts

December 11, 2008

The Massachusetts government released a tool to compare cost and quality across various hospitals in the state.

I browsed it briefly, to see how various institutions compared to each other for things like cardiac testing and management of pneumonia.

Some findings were not a surprise, like recent in-the-news culprits like Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s costing more.

The site also needs more complete data, as some facilities have missing quality and cost measures. The interface is intuitive however, and could potentially be a valuable tool for patients with increasing health deductibles to easily compare costs.
