Selling genetic tests directly to the consumer

September 17, 2008

Another way to make a quick buck without considering the social consequences. All these advertisements end with the tagline, “Ask your doctor if this genetic test is right for you.”

Well, don’t ask me. I’m not trained in genetic counseling. I cannot give informed advice on the complications, follow-up tests and emotional impact of a genetic test result.

More appropriate advice would be for patients to ask a genetic counselor if they want to proceed with home genetic testing.

The same tag line is used for drug ads as well. “Ask your doctor if our me-too ACE-inhibitor is right for you” I guess they use it to add some professionalism to their ad.
