The ultimate goal of the Mnahattan-based management is to close the entire hospital. They are NOT committed to the Brooklyn community and do not care about women. Most Doctors in the OBGYN Department are fine doctors. OBGYN is hard work and lazy students will usually hate it in any hospital. To be more informed about the matter, please see the article BABY BUST in the BROOKLYN PAPER at http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/31/31/31_31_mm_lich_update.html

They are trying to close LICH Maternity but this is not final. I hate to speak badly about the hospital because in general, my training at LICH was rich and rewarding in all other departments... but except for 2-3 attendings on staff and 1-2 residents, that dept was a craphole and its probably best it was closed. Unfortunately it will be a disservice to the community who needs the care the most.

Calling it a 'victory for trial lawyers' sounds like an assumption based on a personal belief about lawyers (previous comment). If this dept closing is related to the director who was fired 1-2 years ago because of an infant injury/death (it was heavily rumored in the hospital but as a med student I could not know the details), who knows, the departmental closure might be justified and best for all in the end.

I did my most of my third year in medical school at LICH, my worst experience during my clinical years was in OB/GYN.

Surgery was fun in comparison.

in OB/GYN, the nursing staff was hostile, the director (and her subsequent replacements)were arrogant, incompetent and cruel and the majority of residents were bitter.
