Expectations

August 9, 2008

It’s important to manage your patient’s expectations when sending them to the hospital.

Do not say you’ll call head so they can be seen sooner. Let them know there may be a wait, despite already having been seen in your office.

Make sure the patient understands the difference between a direct admit versus an evaluation in the ED. It matters in terms of patient co-pays.

These little things make life easier our emergency physician colleagues, so that they don’t have to deal with this.
