Prescription drug abuse

March 25, 2008

WSJ: “Some people don’t perceive prescription drugs to be dangerous, precisely because they are government approved. And not only do young people underestimate how addictive opiates are, many don’t even know what drug they are taking. For some, keg parties are being replaced by ‘pharm parties,’ where kids bring whatever pharmaceuticals they can find, mix the drugs up in a big bowl and eat them like candy, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.”

I had a patient end up in the hospital with a multidrug OD from precisely one of those “pharm parties”.

Presented to me with a plausible story, gave patient the benefit of the doubt, and prescribed certain controlled substances pending old charts.

Within a week or so, patient ended up in ER comatose. “Friends” if you want to call it that, brought patient to ER and freely admitted they brought to the party, drugs their doctors had prescribed.

They shared their drugs to see what happened. Sort of a potluck. Eventually woke up and did well. No more controlled substances from me. Advised patient to find another doc.

I know what Darwin would say, and it would be pretty hard to disagree. I don’t have much sympathy for such wanton contempt of common sense and disrespect for ones own body. We’re not talking about innocent victims here.
