Why not. There was a contracted service to perform for a set fee. The instance of a retroactive fee increase is just plain wrong. It violates completely the notion of a contract. In this case both parties have unequal negotiating power. The school can and will withhold a diploma if bills are not paid at the end, thus putting the student over the barrel. For the school to basically extort fee hikes is unconscionable.

Only in Califnoria would something like this happen!

I hope that California isn’t the only state that will enforce contracts. The catalogue stated that they would not raise tuition while the students were in school. They broke that promise. The notion that the schools catalogue is a contract is not new law.
My med school raised tuition 333% between my acceptance and my senior year. No such statement in the catalogue–nothing that I could do about it.
They also canceled my scholarship that I was slated to get because a consent degree required them to establish a quota of minorities and they could only meet the quota by bribing them and gutted their financial aid budget. Nothing that I could do about that–pre-Bakke.
But I am glad for these kids—a promise is a promise.

First and foremost, there is no such thing as a minority quota. Medical school is not a government officiated program and no school will admit minorities if they do not meet the requirements that are deemed necessary to pass USMLE’s and medical school. I think it’s pretty bigot of you to make an accusation in such a way to imply that minorities who are accepted at YOUR medical school let alone any other only receive admission because they are “filling the quota.” Please make sure that you think about the comments that you say and post prior to doing so…Thanks
