Foreign doctors and primary care

February 20, 2008

It’s not happening in Ohio:

Foreign-born doctors across the United States can apply for a visa waiver if they agree to practice in an underserved community for three years. Thousands of doctors sign up each year and the programs have become a major source of medical service for rural and poor communities.

More than half of the doctors who joined Ohio’s program in the past two years are working as specialists at major hospitals and are not primary care doctors.

Wow, Foreign Medical Graduates are neither stupid nor easily exploited! Who would have imagined this possible? We are only stealing the intellectual cream of the world’s physician pool.

They can’t even get nurse practitioners to do primary care!
And I love the rationalizations by the Cleveland Clinic, claiming they can’t fill their own rosters without stealing FMGs from the county hospitals.

On a separate note from the original Associate Press article: “The percentage of a program doctor’s patients who have Medicaid or Medicare coverage or who are uninsured must at least match those rates for the county’s population.” I predict that the more corrupt of our political ruling class will try this
ploy very soon, on all physicians.

The claim that the world famous Cleveland Clinic and Childrens Hospital in Cincinnati cant find american doctors who want to work there is an outrageous, bald-faced lie.

What next? Are they going to tell us that there are no american-trained plastic surgeons who want to work in Beverly Hills?
