Contrast that to an office visit where diabetes, hypertension, smoking cessation and high cholesterol is addressed – probably less than 100 bucks. Somethings wrong here.

I don’t see the problem. Circumcision is an unethical operation anyway; the more expensive the better. Perhaps the price will make parents find they have more interesting and rewarding ways of using 800 $ besides mutilating their babies.

Charges are just that, usually to be heavily discounted, sometimes to literally nothing. As for the “poor” uninsured patient, if they are Medicaid eligible, and many otherwise uninsured children are, even if their mothers are not, the “discount” would be substantial and non-negotiable.
The “ethics” of circumcision are besides the point here, whether you think it is beneficial, unnecessary genital plastic surgery or a form of genital mutilation. Being shrill does not make this any more important to the issue.

i do circs, and I charge 400, but who cares what i charge no one pays that, i get 40 bucks for doing a circ. I have considered stopping doing it because it reimburses so badly.

Medicine is the only profession that I know of that you don;t need to pay what is billed. Imagine if your mechanic gave you a bill for $2500 and you said you would only pay $300.

As a urologist who performs circumcisions regularly, I can assure you that I have never been paid $800.00 for this procedure and feel lucky when I get $300.00. Circumcisions are the MOST litigious urological procedures and I also am trying to avoid doing them as are most urologists.

This makes absolutely no sense. A Jewish bris typically costs 400-500 bucks (and a mohel performs not only the actual operation, but leads the religious ceremony as well). I can’t imagine any insurance company paying this much for an in-hospital infant circumcision. $1,600 may be the hospital charge, but, as everyone knows, hospitals can charge whatever they want – it’s not what they actually get paid.
