Glenn Beck and the drug-seeking patient

January 11, 2008

Shadowfax with more on the Glenn Beck’s hemorrhoid surgery experience:

Beck’s behavior sounded, to me, like the classic behavior of a drug-seeking patient. Complete with dramatic description of the pain, hysterical behavior, unrealistic expectations, and requirement for massive doses of opioid medications.

I’ve helped take care of some famous people in my career and I can tell you, I’d rather take care of Joe sixpack every day of the week. I originally though it was cool, but usually its nothing but headaches. They want special treatment and have unrealistic expectations.

I would have to agree with the previous comment, as well as Dr. Kevin’s summation of becks behavior.

I disagree. If you ever have the full surgery like Glenn Beck did, you will also be screaming for “opiods”. The pain is worse than any you have ever had before. I find Glenn’s experience to be a little worse than the average patient, but still pretty much the norm. The Dr. who calls it “drug seeking” is really quite cold. It reminds me of why I don’t get surgery if I can possibly avoid it. The doctors don’t care. They don’t care if you’re in agony.
