The ABIM, useful or not?

By promoting the fracturing of internal medicine, is the ABIM killing off general internal medicine?

I saw Faith Fitzgerald speak one time at ACP. She is an intelligent, accomplished, practicing physician. There are hundreds of people like her in academic centers across the country who will be the last of their kind. They are truly giants who have been lashed down and denigrated by the accountants in the driver’s seat of Medicare/AMA/etc. What she says in a polite way is correct, the fricking ABIM is taking away the dignity of the last true doctors bit by bit, for the sake of more money and “certification”.

I hope they are happy when all the generalists are gone.

The last time the ACP asked for my dues, I responded (by email) “are dues discounted for primary care doctors, as are insurance reimbursements?”

not even a “ha-ha good one ha-ha”. Instead the response was of the mechanical “dues are the same for everyone” sort.

I think internists should en-masse divorce themselves from the ACP & ABIM. That way they can go the way of the dinosaur – when, in fact, have they done ANYTHING good for internists?

Just like the AMA, they give the false impression to laypeople that doctors have some great union, while instead screwing doctors by pandering to insurers’ silly ratings systems in the name of “patient safety”. what a crock of sh!t.

The ACP is equally hypocritical, or perhaps worse. Occasionally they come out with positions against, for example, pharma influence over prescribing, yet their journal (Annals) is LOADED with drug ads!

Can anyone give me ANY good reason to continue paying dues to these morons???
