It’s called a colovesical fistula, an uncommon, but not unexpected complication of rectal surgery. Let’s not be sensationalist. It happens. Some sort of technical error may have been involved but who knows. If the diverting colostomy was done for severe diverticulitis, the fistula may have already been present prior to the takedown. Just a classic overly dramatic newpaper story “I was passing stool through my penis!!!” Yeah, that’s what a colovesical fistula is.
