Are drug reps tainting physician food?

November 13, 2007

Howard Brody on a free-for-all over at CafePharma:

. . . the discussion thread had to do with some reps sharing stories of how they had deliberately contaminated the food they brought into physicians’ offices to “get even” with various people who gave them a hard time or who did not value their services. Others took issue with such behavior.

Reading that thread on CafePharma, and the oh-so-eloquent responses posted by some of the drug reps, just cemented my decision never to see reps in my clinic.

If an alien spaceship decimates all drug reps, planet earth will still be a happy place. Not so when this happens to physicians. Planet earth will never be the same without these dedicated and hardworking creatures called doctors.

Why sneeze in the lasagna, why not squirt in some of that hand soap thry’re always giving away?

The food the drug reps bring is Grade Z anyway. I will never allow them in my office ever again. I can’t even get decent sample supplies any more.

I actually found this quite hilarius. Any loser who allows a salesman to buy his $3 lunch deserves to eat sneezed-upon lasagna.

Drop off some samples and real peer-reviewed data and I will consider your product. No charity needed, thank you.

Some of the posters make me laugh. They talk about how easy their job is and how much money they make. Next they complain about how poorly they are treated. If I were making a lot of money for a little work, I would be quiet as a mouse trying not to draw attention to myself. I guess those posters feel entitled to not be inconvenienced for their 100k.

Many detailers are losing their jobs due to the dearth of new products and generics grabbing a larger piece of the pie. As persons controlling the flow of many dollars, physicians should have formal business and economic training prior to medical training. On many visits more money is spent on medications than the physician’s fee.
