That is so sad. I remember in nursing school that I received a punishment for a mischevious act—I was assigned to do a speech to the other students about the practice of female circumcision and the subsequent physical problems that such an act would cause. At the time, I was pissed off about having to do a talk on something I thought was unneccessary. But after my years in the ER, and seeing the victims of such practices (women from foreign coutnries), I was glad that I had learned about it and could help such a patient in a discreet and understanding manner.

If that had been a “cultural custom”, or just claimed to be one, it would have been OK, right? I mean, pushing needles into babies or cutting off parts of their penises…
