I’m not a parent myself but i have always heard that outliving your children is one of the worst things that can happen to a parent.

Therefore, because of limited resources, it’s only fair to give preference to the young. After all the old have already lived there lives, and the young are just starting.

In the US, a person in similar circumstances could have paid for and taken time away from more deserving cases.
