"But we still have the option of taking our own chances, facing the contingencies of life unsupported and alone if that is what our personal “pursuit of happiness” dictates."

Unfortunately, there are those who do not have this "option," their circumstances don't allow them "choice."

Your story show that right now we have the best of all worlds. Want to work in a socialized system. Join the military. Want to be taken care of in a socialized system, join the military. Trust your self to corporate socialism. Get a UAW job. Looking for something in between, take a civilian government job.

But we still have the option of taking our own chances, facing the contingencies of life unsupported and alone if that is what our personal "pursuit of happiness" dictates. Change that about America, and it will not be worth the sacrifices of a military to defend it.

I practiced in the US Navy and I thought it was a pretty good system. I got paid a reasonable amount for not having to work at an excruciating pace, I had no overhead (except professional society fees, etc) and no malpractice liability. I went through med school (USC) on the Navy's dime, and paid them back with time in service (which I thoroughly enjoyed).

My worry is that what we'll end up with is that all physicians will be considered private contractors to a single government payor, with all of the liability remaining exactly as it is now. Even worse would be a "single payor" system as "managed" by private companies such as United Health. Then, we get the worst of ALL worlds.

That was in concept the deal Hilary gave us in '93. Give up your freedom and we will relieve you of malpractice responsibility. It was actually a well thought out exchange as freedom and responsibility are always overtly or covertly linked. She made it explicit.

We wisely rejected the offer of relief from malpractice responsibility outright, as it was clear that the other side of the bargin was full loss of professional autonomy.

Would todays generatio of docs have the guts?
