There are some strange recertification shenanigans going on. Dr. RW and retired doc speculate.

Dr RW is so right to point out the “oxymoronic” certification in “focused” practice of “comprehensive” internal medicine…another way to bilk money out of poorly reimbursed primary care internists, i’m afraid
Although I have a lifetime certification in my field of psychiatry, I thought about recertifying anyway–until I saw the costs—pure greed.
the ABIM, ACP, AMA, and even state medical societies are grasping so hard to retain the membership fee renewals that have perpetuated them for so long; only now, internists like myself are realizing the hundreds, or even thousands of dollars wasted every year is such nonsense, with NO RETURN whatsoever. This year the NY state medical society bragged about staving off a tax on in-office dermatologic procedures! all while letting net primary care income drop below that of electricians, plumbers, teachers, and nurses. Now they’re frantically emailing about their needed PAC monies to prevent the annual threat of ritual CMS cuts to medicare.
primary care internists are only now realizing that we have NO effective politically active body representing our interests. And I say first cut out the fat cats of the above dinosaur organizations.
Physician community is well known to be tolerant. They can take anything without any protest. ABIM is trying to impose impossible and ridiculous things on us at our cost. They are trying to create a whole big industry for recertification. All I can see is sadism on the part of ABIM. Practice improvement modules are a joke. Some people are thinking so hard how to make doctors’ life difficult
