Thunderstorms and your iPod

Did this patient’s iPod lead to further injury as he was struck by lightning?

Although the use of a device such as an iPod may not increase the chances of being struck by lightning, in this case, the combination of sweat and metal earphones directed the current to, and through, the patient’s head.

Something missing is the condition of the iPod and wires. I would expect significant current going through the iPod to cause physical damage to it.

There are reports of people being struck by lightning causing tympanic membrane rupture long before iPods existed, so I don’t think they’ve made their case against the device. Sounds to me like he was struck by lightning, that’s it.
