Making a mockery of rehab

July 26, 2007

Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan are doing serious drug and alcohol rehab centers no favors:

“It is making a mockery of rehabs,” said Harris Stratyner, a psychologist with Caron, a nonprofit addiction treatment organization.

“In some ways it’s starting to make rehabs look like a joke and that’s very sad because hundreds of thousands of people a year are saved.”

Here’s a website you may find useful. http://www.addicted.com is a site for friends, families, and those who suffer from various addictions.

Oh Please! The hundreds of thousands of non-celebrities who go into rehabs every year to get a probation officer or liscensing board off their back or at the advice of their defense attorney have been making rehab look like a joke for a long time. The data supporting the efficacy of rehab vs AA or similar self-help programs is thin at best.

Used to, when people go in trouble, they publically repented their sins and found Jesus. Now they go to rehab to accomplish the same purpose: to go through a public ritual which leave the public feeling compelled to forgive and not punish them.

No one should ever be sent to rehab in lieu of punishment–it fills rehabs with a lot of people “doing time”.
