This is unbelievable:
My most recent involved a patient who came in for a drug related problem. My resident recognized that the patient was a known most wanted criminal. So I called security, who told me that because of HIPAA we could not notify the police. She eventually left the hospital with IV in place to avoid arrest.

Elliott,
You can make your points without resorting to personal attacks.
Kevin
Kevin, I think you’re beyond redemption. There was no obscenity in that post. You’re certainly free to censor me; it’s your blog, but the least you could do if you’re going to remove my valid point that the original poster and you are ignorant is provide an update pointing out that fact.
P.S. Personal attacks are perfectly valid when you’re dealing with a dishonest, BS’er
Elliott,
Your contrarian views are welcomed here and sparks plenty of heat on the blog.
I’m not sure why you feel the need to call people idiots, it simply detracts from your posts.
I simply request that you make your points without calling me or others idiots and without profanity. That isn’t too much to ask.
Kevin
Kevin, it is not a contrarian view to say that HIPAA is poorly misunderstood and is used as a catch-all excuse for all sorts of bizarre things. That is the mainstream view and the facts of the case. It is not a contrarian view to say that doctors dislike HIPAA and use it as a catch-all excuse for all sorts of bizarre things. That is a mainstream view as evidenced by posts like the original blog article, your posts, and your commentors.
What I object to and why I insult you is your willful ignorance in propagating the first (poor understanding of HIPAA) because of the second (your dislike of HIPAA and its restrictions). All I ask is that you provide an update in the main article of your error. If you choose to do so, this will be the first time that you have corrected a factual inaccuracy in one of your posts. It is a rather long history of pointing out these factual inaccuracies and your insistence on ignoring those facts that has led to my contempt.
Kevin,
I have commented on your blog on only one other occasion. It was a simple, straightforward comment that contained no profanity, no incivility and no personal attacks.
One of your fine commenters apparently didn’t like what I said and called me a “whiny whore.”
You did not see fit to delete it or to step in and urge people to keep it civil.
So I guess it all depends on whose ox is being gored, eh?
I call it hypocritical.
Everyone,
A final word about comments.
First, the blog receives over 100-150 comments per day. If I miss one, I apologize. Moderating comments is somewhat lower on my priority list of things to do.
Secondly, the comments used to be more free-wheeling in the blog’s earlier days. I didn’t delete anything back then, so yes - a lot of things went unchecked.
So, for the record, comments will now be deleted due to profanity and personal attacks. If I miss one, I apologize and life goes on.
Kevin
