The sample used isn’t generalizable: it was comprised of Americans shared the features of having advanced education and degrees and who were wealthy – over half earning 100,000 or more. Furthermore, it didn’t include the history and kind of use that the sample had with health insurance, healthcare access and disparity. It doesn’t reflect the general US population.
The survey was biased against the Canadian system and still the ones who expressed a preference for the US system were less than 1/2 of the sample and only beat the ones who expressed a preference for Canada by 5%. Impossible to do, but it would be great to see a similar survey for the uninsured and those on Medicaid.
What about the fact that Americans living in Canada are probably living in Canada because they like Canada and its values. That seems like a bias against the American system to me.
I agree with the first commenter. For most highly-educated, high-wage earners, the U.S. system isnt so bad because they can afford health care and usually lead healthier lives (eat better, afford to go to gym, etc). Thus, they are likely to feel that the US system is favorable.
This study would have been better to compare low-income,American-Canadians with or without health care insurance to low-income Canadians.
The true test would be to compare the preferences of only those who had had serious illnesses and had to go through both systems. There are very few of them around but their preferences would be clear in that instance – American medicine. Socialized medicine is great – until you get sick.
LOL@5:06..Your kidding right? And your personal experience with this is what? ive been through this and the American system sucks big time for those who are seriously ill and have no ins.
So have you been through both systems? No, I thought not. In the States they have to treat you at any hospital you care to show up at, insurance or not – you can’t be denied. In Canada, they can deny you outright or make you wait months or years for treatment.
I am a Canadian living in the United States. As a healthcare professional, if I got sick I would definitely choose the Canadian system over the American. I feel the Canadian system is as good if not better. I have never had a Canadian heart surgeon say to keep their surgical pt alive at all costs for the 30 days to protect his reputation. Then the 30days pass and they pull the plug. Check it out.
