Alli: The "Antabuse of fat"

June 19, 2007

Derek Lowe predicts a swift decline after a strong start:

It’s there to keep you on a low-fat diet, and to make you pay if you stray. If you’re taking orlistat but go out and eat a bucket of fried chicken, you’re going to regret that excursion for years to come. Generally, people just gradually seem to stop taking the stuff regularly, which makes it less likely to do anything, which in turn provides the perfect reason to stop taking it completely.

I reported my experience with the OTC olistat a page or so down on this weblog.

I used it to mitigate the calorie load from a rare treat of ice cream.

No negative treatment symptoms occurred, even though the amount of fat I had consumed in that treat was as much as I ordinarily consume in an entire day.

I don’t need to lose weight. I need to stay right where I am. It was nice to have a little ice cream and not pay the full price in calories.
