Doctor of osteopathy: Does the media know what they do?

May 16, 2007

In detailing a simple car crash story, this newspaper felt the need to explain what a D.O. does, incompletely:

Baez is a doctor of osteopathy, a hospital spokesman said yesterday. Osteopathy is a drug-free, non-invasive medical practice that focuses on total body health by treating the musculo-skeletal system, including joints, muscles and the spine.

Reminds me of this story, where Time felt the public didn’t know what a D.O. was, and freely substituted “M.D.” instead. (via OnThePharm)

Wow, that was a pretty nasty comment left on the original article at Gawker. Does anyone do even a little research before shooting off their mouths these days? A quick wikipedia search would explain how similar D.O. and M.D. are, and that they are both competantly trained physicians.

Heck even newsweek did the same with the physician that saved so many lives in Iraq. The title of the cover was “HeroMD” when he was actually a D.O.

I was pretty blown away, too, Anony 1.59. Amazing, really, the vitriol, especially on Kevin’s original news post.

“I’m a Harvard trained doc! Wah wah wah!”

Ugh, disgusting.

To me the only two ways someone would go to Harvard Medical School is one with Daddy’s money or Student loans. The first makes me lose all respect for the person. The second is a horrible financial decision, because it doesnt matter if you went to Harvard or South Dakota (If they have a medical school.)insurance and Medicare pays the same.

Why does it make you lose respect for a person that their parents pay for their medical school? You don’t respect your colleagues whose school was paid for? It is not like medical students have to pay as they go through medical school so it puts them at a competitive disadvantage. Just because they will make more later on because they don’t have to pay back loans you lose respect? This is jealousy plain and simple.

I have no respect for people whose parents pay for medical school because they have no personal responsibility. It has nothing to do with jealousy, the breastfeeding into adulthood should stop. There is a satisfaction with doing something on your own that they will never get. Most people that are in medical school are over 21 so they are adults. My parents are well off and wanted to pay for my entire medical school, but I wouldn’t let them because I felt at that point they had done enough and it was time to take care of myself completely.
