The problem is not the lack of insurance. The problem is the lack of affordability of health care, and the inability to price shop or shop based on any metric for the consumer.

People talk about health insurance being necessary because they get $150 bills for Igloo coolers in their rooms if they're private pay.

The most honest discussion of the lemming-like insanity about "universal healthcare" that I've seen yet. Health insurance is not equal to health care is not not equal to health. One would never know that reading most articles on the subject. Health care is a personal matter and whether person wants it and wants to insure for it is purely their personal business. A case can be made for provision of charity for the poor, just as for food and housing. We do that on a massive scale now. The only case that can be made for forced collectivisation of costs, is with the case of Emergency care that neither the provider nor the patient have the freedom to refuse. The only right we have to force the uninsured biker to pay for health coverage he doesn't want is strictly limited to that emergency care when he comes into the ER crunched up and neither he nor the hospital can say "No".
