Mandatory pill-splitting

What is the big hairy deal? I have never ever not once had a patient object to spliting tablets when they didn’t have drug coverage. It takes a few seconds to split a 2 dollar tablet and save a dollar–a great return on your time. The drugs that I prescribe all cost about the same per tablet–usually 2-3 $–regardless of dosage.

Remembering to take several meds ALWAYS requires use of a pill tray. So he just has a pill spitter by while he loads it. Remember to split pill A is no different than remembering to take 2 of pill C.

Most of the pharmacies here will split the tablets for the infirm and arthritic or anyone upon request.

Why do people who buy crappy insurance coverage object to any measure used to cut cost? People will moan and complain all day long about a $10 copay and when their crap insurance plan refuses to pay the most expensive meds they complain about it. If you refuse to split pills and insist on taking name brands then avoid signing up for a crappy plan. If the pharmacist feels bad for this guy, why didn’t he offer to split the tablets himself? I don’t work for healthcare, but I know that in any business you get what you pay for.

I dont know why this would be such a big deal for anyone. i do it all the time. I chose to take Metoprolol instead of toprol. The toprol is 25mg but the metoprolol comes in 50mg. I get 15 and go home and split them. This has never caused me undue stress or anxiety. I usually just put them all out on the counter and split them all at the same time.
