I have a framed advertisement for Camels from The Saturday Evening Post in 1931 that shows an Otolaryngologist (wearing his head mirror of course) recommending that you “give your throat a vacation…smoke a FRESH cigarette”.

As ridiculous as those ads look now, I’d still rather have them than the restricted free speech that squelches all tobacco advertising. The market would clearly not tolerate or desire ads like that, and that’s the way that sort of thing should be dealt with, not by government fiat.
