Doctor as businessman

March 6, 2007

Many physicians have lousy business sense. Not this one:

“I’ve always been a successful businessman,” said Matlock, who received an MBA in health care from the University of California at Irvine in 2000. “I understand the value of branding.”

Matlock said his licensing agreements are necessary to protect his intellectual property rights. “I understand how to capitalize on an opportunity. Why should I give it away?”

I don’t know what to think of this guy.

Is he scum?

Is he genius?

I guess all cosmetic surgeons have to deal with a bit of heat like this though.

His patients think he is worth the prices he charges. Cosmetic surgeries are elective; he doesn’t seen to be misrepresenting his work as medically necessary. So what he sells is a luxury service that has found a willing market, and perhaps is attractive because it is exclusive because it is expensive.

I vote for genius.

He just needs to lay low during duck season

He got the credentials(MD) and this greatly adds to his “branding”. This is the dilemma of a guild. Do we want him in our guild? Is he playing by guild rules?

In our experience, there is a delicate balance. Sometimes too much business savvy affects the physician’s capability of practicing at the top of his/her craft. There are physicians out there with a great sense of both medicine and business, but they are rare indeed.

What I want to know is how are there possibly enough women in need of “vaginal cosmetic surgery” to justify a $12m a year business? Even at the full fee of $50k ($50K to make that part look better??!!), that means he’s “servicing” 240 women a year.

I didn’t know that there were that many women making enough out of porn to afford his rates. And if it’s not them. Who are his customers?
