The UCLA psychiatry department sex scandal

February 21, 2007

Details are emerging from this sordid tale where a psychiatry resident was seducing the attendings:

Allegations are unfolding of sex among residents and doctors in the psychiatry department at UCLA’s medical school that are part of an unusual sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a male resident against UCLA and a woman who was one of his supervising physicians.

Jurors will be asked to decide whether the Columbia University-educated doctor and his supervisor had sex (he says they did, she says they didn’t); Did the resident lost a coveted post because of it? And did university officials responded properly?

It will be explosive as research psychiatrists are forced to discuss their sex lives under oath, so explosive – that one of the parties has already attempted to try and convince the judge to close the proceedings and seal the records.

I knew there must be something (or is it someone?)attractive about a career in psychiatry.

Doesn’t happen where I’m training. That’s fine, though. My spouse would kill me. Go, Bruins!

WHY is it so hard for people to stick to the “Don’t shit where you eat” plan. I’m been on both sides of a lawsuit like this. The suckage factor is overwhelming. The only ones who really come out ahead, ever, are the lawyers.

Re: Anonymous post: There are some serious hotties in the UCLA psych dept, and makes me wonder about their selection critera…but ya gotta know that 15% of shrinks admitted to stupping their patients during therapy (in a 1990s anonymous poll)–

Moreover, Freud, Jung–all the pioneers in the field–sexually exploited their patients, so it’s not like the professional precedent isn’t explicit.
