Lets be clear on what this is really about. It is about abortion.
Not everyting that utilizes medical technology is medical care. Lethal injections for execution is a clear example. Many physicians do not consider abortion for failed contraception, to be within the scope of Hippocratic medicine, and therefore not “medically appropriate care”.
Given that, wouldn’t these physicians be completely with the AMA ethical guidelines to not make referrals for abortions or discuss the option of abortion?
Since when do people need a referral to go to an abortion clinic anyway?
How many sexually active women don’t know of that option?
I wouldn’t know where the local abortion clinic was if I didn’t see the protestors there regularly.
This is a problem only in the mind of the article writer. And who is this bioethicist dweeb playing the moral police declaring that the studies shows that many physicians are not doing the right thing? The study doesn’t show what physicians are doing. The only “fact” revealed is how they responded to a poll. “The right thing” can only be determined in each individual situation withing the context of the doctor-patient relationship. This relationship, for some patients, is best secured by moral neutrality, a neutrality that for other patients undermines their confidence in their physician.
A little tolerance of difference is ok.
