Former drug reps are visiting physician offices to counter the hype put out by the pharmaceutical companies:
These consultants — or counter-detailers, as they are called — inform doctors about which drugs work best. Sometimes that means recommending older, less expensive treatments. Their messages are driven by hard science, backers of the service say , not pharmaceutical company earnings reports.

Do they bring food and swag?
I am close personal friends with one of these independent consultants in PA, and she delivers lunch to doctors’ offices just the same as when she was working for Smith Kline….
She points out, QUITE reasonably, that the offices are busy and the only time the doctors are available is when their staff is eating lunch….she considers the price of some chicken salad and rolls more than worth the ten minutes she gets to spend with the physicians….
Are physicians the ONLY group of professionals in the world who are so weak-willing that they’ll “buy” a product purely based on whoever gave them the best lunch, or is this completely erroneous belief yet another example of widespread “doc dissing?”
I haven’t let drug reps into the office in years–tired of the hyped sales jobs. I would let these guys in.

That’s the general response, according to my friend, as soon as the office staff and physicians realize that they’re dealing with something entirely different. PA is a pilot program, and hopefully, we’ll see more programs like this in other states.
