Are the Vytorin ads racist?

February 22, 2007

John Mack takes a look at the recent ads and wonders:

Why are these “disturbing?” They are reminiscent of a much-criticized comment made by New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin, who once said: “It’s time for us to rebuild New Orleans “” the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans…” At the time, Nagin was running for re-election and the comment brought much criticism. But it didn’t prevent him from being re-elected.

I’m trying to decide if these comparisons have a racial undertone or could be viewed as racist.

I think the ads are very visually compelling. People can look like their fav [bad] foods. People of different reces look a little different from each other. Can we agree to that without concluding we are racist in the derogatory way?

I don’t prescribe this as I am an ophthalmologist, but every patient I ask about their experience with this drug says it has worked very well, by the way.
PS I also love the rozerem ads, and the interactive wed site – I think Kevin has previously linked to it. Super creative. PS, M.D.

I am an ophthalmologist who takes Vytorin. It has worked much better than Zocor alone for me. Yes I like to keep things easy, one pill versus two. BTW I found that a rep had dropped off some Omacor samples in my cabinet the other day presumably for dry eyes but I may just have to add some if my triglycerides start rising. BTW I am white and would be more than happy to pose next to the Vanilla milkshake!
