It only does any good if you have a ton of medical bills to pay. It can also be cathartic if your doctor is an ass or simply refuses to be honest with you what happened or even acknowledge you. The latter is the reason most people sue.

If the objective is to get some confirmation that the clinic/hospital took action to ensure no repetition of the mistake...well, good luck. My experience in a somewhat similar circumstance was that the clinic put a gag order on everyone involved, only the risk management attorney would communicate with me, and she offered nothing but the stereotypical evasion and distortions that doctors here (probably correctly) accuse malpractice attorneys of using. Got nowhere, felt I'd been stabbed in the back repeatedly by people who otherwise present themselves as angels, and it destroyed my faith in the world for a very long time.

Tried consulting with the local consumer health advocacy group but they were understaffed and overwhelmed already trying to help our uninsured/Medicaid population get care.

Letters to the state board of professional review got no reply, and I was never able to reach anyone by phone who seemed to know what he/she was supposed to do.

I don't support lawsuits because I don't think anyone gains on either side except the lawyers. But I also don't think patients can hope to get any help through "the system".
