Some Muslims in the UK are refusing to use alcohol-based antibacterial hand cleansers:
Dispensers containing anti-bacterial gel have been placed outside wards at hospitals all over Britain in a bid to get rid of superbugs like MRSA and PVL.It prevents people bringing in more infections. But some Muslims refuse to use the hand cleansers on religious grounds because they contain alcohol.

I’m not muslim, so maybe I’m way off base, but isn’t the prohibition against consumption, not contact? AFAIK the origin of most alcohol prohibitions has to do with intoxication and damage to the body (which belongs to G-d). How on earth is an alcohol hand wash intoxicating or harmful?

And why are we allowing this insanity? If a doctor didn’t examine patients because of “religious reasons” he would have to find a new job. It’s a like a fireman who refuses to use a water hose – mutually exclusive.

This is just another attack on innocent Muslims. The Islamophobes seek to humiliate Muslims by portraying them as “dirty” and “disease carriers”. They then go so far as to demand that Muslims violate Sharia law by literally washing themselves with alcohol. (And no, all you Islamic scholars, Allah’s (swt) proscription of alcohol does not apply only to its ingestion.)

@American Muslim: I am a practicing Muslim, and I don’t know what your sources are, but the use of alcohol in any way but drinking is not prohibited by Islam. It can be used in perfumes, anti-septic, etc… I would advise you to stop seeing conspiracies where they don’t exist (i.e., the “infidels” want to destroy all us Muslims), but I know people like you – it wouldn’t do any good.
To the non-Muslims reading this, remember there are more than 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, don’t let the stupidity of the few speak for the majority.

I shall not engage in a dispute with you in front of unbelievers. I will simply state that I am not an Islamic scholar, nor do I believe you to be one either. There are many websites where you can find discussions of the external use of ethanol, and most of them support my position.
At any rate, why did the arrogant British authorities not discuss the matter with the British Muslim Council(s) and request an appropriate fatwa before attempting forcibly to impose a (probably) haram practice on British Muslims? The answer is obvious and requires no elaborate conspiracy theories. It is purely and simply another deliberate action intended to offend and humiliate Muslims.

Do the prohibitions against the use of ethanol keep you from filling your gas tank? If using ethanol in a machine is not prohibited, certainly Muslims would be prohibited from the sale or dispensing of ethanol containing gasoline, which will certainly soil their hands.
Where was the Musmlim community and their outrage when the US government imposed the addition of ethanol to gasoline products?
No, this issue is not one of outrage against the forced exposure to ethanol. Why complain about hand washing and not about gasoline? The answer is obvious: It is another attempt by fanatics to demonstrate the infidels’ conspiracy against them, in order to gain traction in their quest for world domination under the guise of political correctness.

If you are correct about there being only one god, then by simple logic the one god each of you believe in must necessarily be the same god.

This is easy. If you want to work in the hospital then wash your damn hands with the approved sterilization agent whether it is alcohol, ethanol, barbitol, dettol, or whatever the hospital requires. If you can’t do that then go setup your own practice somewhere far away – preferrably in KSA.
