Apparently the contestant drank about 2 gallons of water, and was found dead 5 hours later.
Update:
Orac with the best analysis of the case thus far. Here’s part 1.

Kudos to our overhydrated society – where every pseudo – exercise physiologist advocates walking around with a bottle of Aqua Fina belted to their waist.
The body runs better when it’s a little dry and acidotic.
As cardiac anesthesiologists will tell you – coming off bypass – “An empty heart is a happy heart.”
It seems like we’ve come to accept that every drop of water lost through perspiration needs to be immediately replaced.
I was a 1:47 half-miler in college – used to run 8-12 miles daily of interval training. It wasn’t usually until after my warm down and shower that I considered getting a drink of something to quench some thirst. I never passed out or blew away from dryness !!!
Our unit went on the traditional forced 20 mile march at the end of basic training at Fort Jackson – in a hot summer of 1963. Nobody fell out from dehydration on less than 1 canteen opf water.
These uneducated reporters from radio were victims of the attitude in our society that evry breath requies 14 cc of rehydration to maintain good health and keep those ABS flat.
I didn’t read the post – I’m sorry someone died. This isn’t about that incident, specifically. It’s about watching some 20 year old power walking down Walnut Street, in Philadelphia while drinking from their bottled water.
They could wait til their done-water is basically bad for you. They’d be better off having a smoke and chilling out.
Unless they have “SIXPACK ONE” genes-they’ll be dead at 65 anyway.
You guys are killing me!

Every doc I have ever had in my life says Water is GOOD for you. Now Im not talking about drinking water like this radio station had folks do Im talking about 8-10 glasses a day. Good or bad? Maybe I need to throw away the aqua fina and start buying the marlboro’s again?
Please don’t smoke-I was just kidding.
This is a tragic loss of a womans life. It is very painful for evryone she left behind.
My sarcastic blog was intended to get people to really think about consuming large quantities of water which everyone just assumes is an OK thing.
If you are thirsty your body is telling you it needs to be hydrated. But in our society it has almost become a religon to possess a bottle of spring water at all times.
This same mentality was inherent in the willful blindness to the possibility that this tragedy might just occur as a result of this stupid contest.
It’s ridiculous.
My very best wishes go out to this woman’s family. I am so sorry this happened. God be with them in their grief.
