John Mack surfs CafePharma and finds some low self-esteem:
I’ve been hanging around CafePharma lately just to hear what pharma sales people are thinking. It turns out that many of them don’t think they are worth the salaries they are paid and that they are just not that necessary. Some think any run-of-the-mill UPS delivery person can provide almost the same value-added services as they can, which involves mostly distributing samples and lunches.

Obviously, they don’t know what it is that they have that other lunch and swag-deliverers don’t…an image that makes other people want to please them and get their approval.
The ladies want to be you. The men want to have you. And vice versa for the boys. That swag and those sammiches aren’t all you bring to the table.
I don’t think that attitude applies to all Medical reps but i certainly met a few who didn’t really understand how they’d come to be driving a Mercedes and earning £40k basic.
Some of the better reps i met took their jobs and themselves very seriously which is really the attitude i’d expected from all the experienced reps i was working with, but in actual fact it seemed that they were more likely to be the ones playing the system.
It’s a job i’d recommend to anyone having done it myself for a while, however i can guarantee that at some point you’ll think to yourself “am i really getting paid for doing this?”
