IM used to be the king of all non-surgical specialties, the doctor's-doctor. But they don't do kids, or pregnant patients, or patients with 'female' problems, or patients with 'male' problems (urology), and there are myriad organ specialists (heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, thyroid, intestines etc.) leaving the plain old geriatric patient as the unclaimed turf of the internist.
